Have You Seen Reservoir Dogs?

It can be debated whether or not Reservoir Dogs is an action movie or not, but I think that’s irrelevant. If it’s entertaining, then it doesn’t matter how it’s classified. And for the record, I think it’s an action movie. There might have been a lot of talking in the diner, which was an awesome scene by the way, but once they get to that warehouse things really start to heat up. Some might consider the action in this movie more like gratuitous violence, but I don’t see it that way. They were trying to capture the nature of these characters, and since they were gangsters that were all trying to look out for themselves once things went wrong, it was accurate representation.

Only Quentin Tarantino could come up with such a sick and twisted plot. All these gangsters that don’t know one another come together to pull of the perfect heist. The only problem is that there’s an undercover cop amongst them. Once they find out there’s a rat, no one trusts the next guy. This leads to some very intense scenes. You can feel your pulse race as you watch some of these scenes play out, especially the one with Buscemi and Keitel in the bathroom. If you liked Pulp Fiction, or any other Tarantino movie for that matter, you will love Reservoir Dogs. I caught it on DirectTV last night for the first time. I’m glad I was home to see it.

Get Smart with Steve Carell

Get Smart with Steve Carell is a remake of the classic 1960’s television series of the same name. Revolving around Steve Carell who plays agent Maxwell Smart or Agent 86. Along the way he travels from his headquarters, the CONTROL agency, all the way to Moscow and back to try and stop the evil secret group KAOS who are attempting to bomb the building that the president will be listening to an orchestra in. Thankfully he gets help from Anne Hathaway who plays agent 99, and eventually falls for the charming and suave Maxwell Smart. The duo runs into more trouble after the CONTROL agency has been destroyed, and then they learn that their agency has been infiltrated by a double-agent. This leads to distrust amongst the remaining agents as they attempt to discover not only who the secret agent is, but also makes it difficult to stop the bombing of the building that the president will be in.

Although there is a serious element to the movie, most of the movie keeps the same quirky humor that made the 60’s version of the television show so popular. After the building is destroyed, Agent Maxwell Smart decides that use of the Cone of Silence is necessary to make sure that no one is listening in on their conversations. This proves to be a problem as the Cone of Silence works just as well as the 1960’s version. The agents cannot hear each other, upon this realization Agent Smart remarks that it was he who had hit the chief in the head with a fire extinguisher in an attempt to clear his conscience.

Get Smart is a great movie that stays faithful to the original 1960’s television show starring actors Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, and Dwane ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and thanks to Directv New York I was able to watch it from the comfort of my house!

Cameron’s Avatar becomes top movie attraction of all time

http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2009/08/04/images/20090804_avatar_560x375.jpgBarely a month after its release, James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster Avatar has overtaken Titanic to become the highest-grossing movie of all time.

The estimated worldwide box office takings have reached $US1.8 billion after Avatar continued to be the top attraction in US theatres for the sixth successive weekend,

It is taking more that $US2 million each week day in the US and has passed what Titanic, also made by Cameron, earned over the course of about 10 months.

Avatar has beaten box office records in New Zealand and before last weekend became the fifth largest grossing film of all time with $10.9 million.

It is also the fastest film to achieve $10 million, which it did in just 31 days.

The next fastest, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, took 33 days. It is the top all-time box office film with $14,5 million.

The movie, which uses modern 3D technology, went home with trophies for best drama and best director at last week’s Golden Globe awards. The New Zealand-based special effects production team also won an award.

If Avatar is among the 10 nominees for Best Picture when the Oscar lists are unveiled Febuary 2, the coming Academy Awards could help boost the movie even more.
